How do I choose paint colors that go together?Start from something that won't change, like flooring, countertops, brick, a rug or roof color, and pull colors from it. Build a palette of one main color, one supporting color and one accent, keep the undertones consistent (all warm or all cool), and test large samples on the wall in morning and evening light before you commit.Read more
How often should a house exterior be repainted?Painted wood siding typically needs repainting every 5 to 10 years, stained wood every 3 to 7, and fiber cement every 10 to 15. Sun exposure, moisture, paint quality and prep make the biggest difference. Repaint when you see fading, chalking, cracking or peeling, before bare wood is exposed.Read more
What is the difference between flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and gloss paint?Sheen is how much light the dried paint reflects. From least to most shiny: flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and gloss. Lower sheens hide wall flaws but are harder to clean. Higher sheens are tougher and wipe clean but highlight every dent, patch and roller mark.Read more Questions homeowners ask
Does it cost anything to post a painting project?
No. Posting a project is free for homeowners and businesses, and you are never obligated to hire anyone who reaches out.
How many painters will contact me?
Five at most. Once five painters say they are interested, your project stops taking new responses, so your phone does not ring all week.
Who sees my phone number and address?
Approved painters in your county see your first name, your town and the project details. Your phone number, email and street address go only to painters who say they are interested, and your project page shows you exactly who they are.
When is the best time to paint a house exterior in Northern New York?
Most exterior painting here happens from late May through September. Paint needs a dry surface and temperatures above the minimum printed on the can (often somewhere between 35 and 50 degrees) for hours after it goes on, and cold nights with heavy dew shrink the window in spring and fall. Interior work can happen any month, and winter is often when painters have the most openings.
My house was built before 1978. Does that change anything?
It can. Homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint, and federal EPA rules require painters who disturb those surfaces to be Lead-Safe Certified firms using lead-safe work practices. Check the pre-1978 box on the form so painters can plan for it, and ask for their certification before you hire.
How do painters get on NNY Painting?
Painters sign up free and we review each one before they can see projects. NNY Painting connects you with painters but does not employ them, so ask any painter you are considering for proof of insurance and a couple of references.
